    Why we chose Livability

I have got to know a few of the team at Livability and have been able to visit some of the sites where so much of the work is done, and I have seen at first-hand what an important role the charity plays in helping disabled people of all ages to gain the levels of confidence and independence that will help them to enjoy as normal a life as possible. Therefore, it was an easy decision for me to help with our donation and I and the Dataquest team look forward to working with the Livability team over the year with some of its events and also the Livability 2011 Annual Golf Tournament which we are proud to be able to sponsor.

    About Livability

Livability was formed from the merger of John Grooms and the Shaftesbury Society in 2007, Livability is a national disability charity transforming the lives of thousands of disabled people and their families through high-quality care, support and education services. Our vision is for disabled people to realise their full potential and achieve real independence and choice in their lives.

Despite many positive changes in society, life for disabled people in the UK can still be very challenging - nearly one in six people (10 million) have a disability and the number of disabled people has increased by 28% in the last 20 years. 40% of disabled people are trapped in unsuitable housing with little choice over where they live and disabled people are more than twice as likely as non-disabled people to leave school with no formal academic or vocational qualifications.

Livability provides a range of services to disabled people and their families across the UK, from schools and colleges, residential centres to supported living. We also provide wheelchair accessible holidays and respite breaks for disabled people and their families operate a specialist Brain Injury Rehabilitation centre and undertake overseas work.

    • £1000 could enable 24 disabled people to have an outside accessible area to develop their independence and confidence, as well as their self-esteem.
    • £3000 could provide vital speech and language aids at our school and colleagues. By touching one of the pictures on a Dynovox talker, a disabled person can communicate their thoughts and feeling with relative ease.
    • £5000 could pay for a specialised bathroom for 5 disabled residents, a sensory experience that can enhance our feelings of wellbeing and allow freedom of movement not experienced elsewhere.
